There's something I've learnt over the years as a wedding planner that I wish more couples knew.
A beautiful venue, an impressive photography portfolio, or a stunning floral arrangement doesn't necessarily tell you what working with the people behind them will be like.
And believe me, the people can make an enormous difference!
I've had the pleasure of collaborating with wonderful professionals who are genuinely passionate about their work, helpful, respectful, and always willing to find solutions.
But I've also experienced the opposite.
And that's one of the reasons why I believe having a wedding planner by your side can be so valuable.
Your wedding planner is also your intermediary
When couples hire me, they know I'll help them organise their wedding, coordinate suppliers, and manage the practical details.
But there's another important part of my job: I'm also the person who manages communication between the couple, the venue, and all the professionals involved.
Throughout the planning process, there are countless conversations, requests, clarifications, and decisions to coordinate.
Sometimes everything goes smoothly. Other times, different suppliers have different needs, a venue has specific restrictions, or a request requires a little more discussion.
And occasionally, situations become more complicated than they should be.
Rather than leaving my couples to manage all these conversations themselves, I act as their point of reference.
I communicate their wishes, ask questions, clarify expectations, and work with the professionals involved to find practical solutions.
Sometimes that means explaining why a particular request isn't feasible.
Other times, it means standing firm when I believe my couples' interests need to be protected.
My role isn't simply to coordinate suppliers. It's also to help my couples navigate the relationships between them.
The people behind the beautiful pictures
When choosing a wedding venue or supplier, it's natural to focus on what you can see.
The beautiful villa, the elegant floral designs, the photographer's incredible images, or the caterer's delicious-looking dishes.
And of course, all these things matter!
But they don't necessarily tell you how that professional communicates, how flexible they are, or how they respond when something doesn't go exactly as planned.
Sometimes, a venue that seems extremely accommodating during the initial conversations becomes less willing to discuss certain requests once the contract has been signed.
Or a supplier with an excellent reputation might turn out to be particularly difficult to communicate with.
I'm certainly not suggesting that this happens all the time.
In fact, most of the professionals I work with are wonderful, and I'm genuinely grateful for the relationships I've built over the years.
But experience has taught me that professionalism isn't only about the quality of someone's work. It's also about their attitude, reliability, and willingness to collaborate.
And these qualities aren't always visible in a portfolio.
A good team knows how to help each other
This is something I feel particularly strongly about.
Every professional involved in a wedding has their own role and responsibilities, and those absolutely need to be respected.
But I also believe that a wedding works best when everyone is willing to help each other when necessary.
Sometimes, a small gesture of cooperation can make an enormous difference.
Perhaps one supplier needs a few extra minutes to finish setting up, or an unexpected change means we need to adjust the order of certain activities.
In those moments, having a team that communicates, adapts, and supports one another is incredibly valuable.
Being professional doesn't mean focusing exclusively on your own responsibilities and ignoring everything happening around you.
Of course, this doesn't mean expecting people to take on tasks outside their expertise or contractual obligations.
It's about having a collaborative attitude rather than approaching every request with a rigid “That's not my job.”
Because ultimately, we're all working towards the same goal.
When things get a little more complicated
Not every disagreement is a serious problem.
Sometimes it's simply a misunderstanding, a difference in working methods, or a request that needs further clarification.
Other times, discussions can involve more delicate matters, such as additional costs, contractual conditions, security deposits, or disagreements over responsibilities.
And these are situations where having someone experienced to communicate on your behalf can make a real difference.
I've found myself managing difficult conversations, dealing with frustration, and occasionally even receiving criticism for situations that weren't directly my responsibility.
Is it always pleasant? Absolutely not!
But I believe part of my job is knowing how to handle these moments professionally, without unnecessarily involving my couples in every disagreement.
There's a difference between keeping couples informed and making them carry the emotional weight of every difficult conversation happening behind the scenes.
Of course, if something affects their finances, contractual rights, or decisions, they need to be fully informed and involved.
But if I can resolve an issue directly and avoid adding unnecessary stress to their planning experience, that's exactly what I prefer to do.
What I look for in the professionals I work with
When I recommend a venue or supplier, I don't consider only their portfolio, reputation, or prices.
I also pay attention to how they communicate, how reliable they are, and whether they're willing to work collaboratively.
Because even the most talented professional can make the planning process unnecessarily difficult if communication and cooperation are missing.
And sometimes, a less well-known professional turns out to be an absolute pleasure to work with, bringing just as much dedication and care to the wedding.
Naturally, the final choice always belongs to my couples.
My job is to share my experience, explain the options, and help them make informed decisions.
And when they've already chosen their venue or suppliers, I work to establish a positive and professional relationship with everyone involved.
A successful wedding isn't simply about bringing together talented individuals. It's about creating a team that knows how to work together.
And that's something I care about enormously.
